James E. O'Briant
was born in Missouri in 1947. He grew up in Iowa and graduated from the university of Northern
Iowa. He has been playing the trombone and tuba since childhood, and has been involved with
many musical organizations, including:
"Bettendorf Park Band", Bettendorf, Iowa (Member, 1976-1980; Assistant Director, 1978-1980; Director, 1980-1988), "Bettendorf Park Band Foundation" (Founder and first President, 1984-1988), "Watsonville Band", Watsonville, California (Member and Assistant Conductor, 1994-1997), "Watsonville Brass Band" (Member, 1994-1997), "South Valley Brass" (Brass Quintet, Gilroy, California; Founder and Tubist, 1995-1998), "Morgan Hill Wind Symphony", Morgan Hill, California (Member and Assistant Conductor, 1997-1999), "Odyssey Theater Company", Gilroy, CA (Orchestral Conductor, 1998-1999), "South Valley Symphony Orchestra", Gilroy, California (Principal Tuba, 1998-present; Assistant Conductor, 2001-present).
Jim began composing and arranging while in high school, and continues to do so to this day. He founded Bayside Music Press in 1995, as a vehicle to publish custom arrangements written for the "South Valley Brass", and that catalog has grown to include compositions and arrangements by other composers and arrangers as well. At the urging of Oleg Mezjuev, Jim also began composing ragtime in 1997, and MIDI files of some of those pieces may be found on this site.
The Bayside Music Press website at http://www.baysidemusicpress.com became a reality in the fall of 2002, and the Bayside Catalog now includes several hundred titles published by Bayside Music Press and several other small publishers. There are Bayside Publications of rags by Jim O'Briant and Bill Rowland, and rags from other publishers as well. There are also many instrumental editions of rags from several publishers.
