David Beattie
was born in 1942 in Glen Innes, Australia, but has spent most of his life in Sydney. His formal
musical training, undertaken during childhood, was classical and was rudimentary. His love of
ragtime was awakened on hearing Winifred Atwell's version of Botsford's "Black and White
Rag" in 1955 and has remained ever since.
He is a research scientist at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, and
is currently developing his interest in ragtime, particularly that from Australia, so as to
have a satisfying hobby when he retires from the workforce in a few years.
